Metro4All in Kiev
29.04.2015
On April 18 – 24 Metro4All team and volunteers were busy collecting accessibility data for 52 stations of Kiev metro. Results are available in our web- and Android apps.
Accessibility mapping of Kiev subway, subsequent data processing and programming of Metro4All apps became possible due to help and support of Kiev Investment Agency, Kiev metro administration and NGO “Prava Lyudyny”.
Our thanks go to Kyiv Investment Agency for arranging cooperation with Kiev metro services, providing free access to metro stations and office for comfortable work, and to NGO “Prava Lyudyny”, who not only organized effective and fast data collection, but also translated Metro4All website and applications into Ukranian.
Kiev – 13th city added to Metro4All apps, and Kiev metro is third largest of metro systems we mapped (after Moscow and Saint-Petersburg).
Total numbers for Kiev metro:
- There are 250 entrance routes and 250 exit routes at 52 stations.
- 12 stations are equipped with elevators and/or wheelchair platforms.
- Escalators are installed at 27 stations.
- There are 6 stations in Kiev metro which has routes accessible for wheelchair users (with minimal passage width of 68 cm) – Boryspilska, Holosiivska, Vasylkivska, Vystavkovyi Tsentr, Ipodrom, Teremky. None of the station has step-free routes with passage width of 75 cm or more.
- 16 stations are accessible for elderly people. Average number of steps to climb while entering/leaving the station – 44 steps.
- For parents with baby-strollers 44 stations are accessible.
Station plans
Among other things, Kiev now has a full set of detailed metro stations schematics with numbered exits.
Accessibility
Here are some details about accessibility-related features of Kiev metro.
Elevators and wheelchair platforms:
Working elevators are available at 9 stations of Kiev metro. But on some stations (Chervony Khutir, Vyrlytsia) elevators are not accessible for all categories of wheelchair users due to narrow doors (58-63 cm) one need to get through in order to enter to the elevators hall.
Access to one of the elevators at Chervony Khutir is also complicated with a steep ramp (ramp slope is 19 degrees).
Also 7 of Kiev metro stations have wheelchair platforms installed. For example at Maidan Nezalezhnosti station 4 exits feature such platforms. But call buttons are not working, so it’s not clear if one can use them and how to do it.
Doors and turnstiles:
Almost all doors in Kiev metro are narrower then 72 cm. None of the stations equipped with elevators or wheelchair platforms has wider doors providing easy access for wheelchair users, baby-stroller carriers and other passengers with reduced mobility.
Also all 52 station have narrow (55-56 cm) turnstiles installed. But in each case passengers can use wider (90 cm) gate near the booth of station officer.
Stairs and escalators:
More than half of Kiev metro stations have escalators.
At almost all metro exits passsengers will have to climb 1-2-3 steps, usually doubled by ramps or rails.
Most of the stairs in metro have rails on them.
Rails are not always in good condition, and it seems that they’re not often used by passengers.
Some interesting facts about Kiev metro:
– transfer routes between Maidan Nezalezhnosti and Khreshchatyk work on schedule, there’s also schedule for elevators;
– underground passaged connected to metro stations are heavily used for small trade;
– there are quite good 2,5D station plans on each station.
